EU-students: no visa required
One advantage of being a European Union national is that you are free to go and stay anywhere. You do not need a visa and you do not have to register with the Aliens Police. They would like you to do so, though.
Non-EU students: residence permit necessary
Students from outside the European Union need a residence permit. There
are two categories, depending on your nationality and the length of
your stay.
Non-EU students from some countries
Students from some countries, e.g. the USA and Japan, can enter the
Netherlands without a visa. If you stay less than 3 months, you do not need a residence permit.
If you stay longer than 3 months, you have to apply for a residence
permit after arrival. Such a residence permit costs € 433.
Non-EU students from other countries
Students from most other countries have to obtain an authorization for temporary stay before
they arrive. Zuyd University can apply for the authorization for temporary stay for you. This speeds up the process immensely; you have to pay
€ 250 in advance to Zuyd University. You apply for the residence permit after arrival, which will cost you another € 188.
For a full overview of countries and procedures, please visit NUFFIC. If you need an authorization for temporary stay, please contact Ms N. Lardenoije-Lemmens at Zuyd University’s Central International Office.
