>Heerlen

Heerlen is the second largest city in the south of Limburg, with a long history dating back to Roman times. Most important, perhaps, is its history as a coal mining town: the various mining communities grew together over the years into what is now a city of some 90,000 people. This accounts for the large area over which the city is spread out. It is a modern place: there are few old buildings in its spacious and green shopping centre.

Heerlen houses the main campus of Zuyd University, a large, modern building with about 3,500 students and staff studying and working there every day. Besides the School of Computer Science courses of Network Infrastructure Design and Information Science, Heerlen has the Schools of the Built Environment, Facility Management, Health Care, Life Sciences, Teacher Training and Technology.
